| 2381 | from "Letter from Uncle Johnny" (John Rutledge Shannon) In 1792 ... Arthur Shannon was born, the 2nd youngest of 10. Arthur married Jane Allen in 1819 or 1820, who was about the same age. In 1850 Arthur & Jane and family left for Canada. From the same part of Sligo, though not all from the same townland, came McKims, Jacksons, Irwins, McLoughrys, Donaghs, Allens, Shaws and many others at the same time by the same boat: Sligo to Greenock, a day; Greenock to Quebec, 6 weeks. Then to Montreal, and as they could arrange for boat, up to Toronto. "Daddy Kim" was a sort of leader, & he considered Mono Mills (Peel Co) a good center. The Shannons located about 8 miles west or so. On Feb 17, 1852, Arthur was hit by a fallen tree and died of his injuries that night. | SHANNON, Arthur (I21509)

| 2382 | HEUBI, Helen Coleman (née Allen) - Peacefully, at 82, on June 11, 2013 after a severe stroke. Predeceased by husband, Paul Heubi. Survived by brothers Peter R. (Toronto), Hugh A. J. (Forest Mills, ON), daughters Anne Louise and Mary (Eric Marr) and grandchildren Assantewa, Ameche, Carrick, Oliver and Eloïse. Trained as a linguist (Victoria College, class of 5T3), she taught French and German in Ontario for some years. Later in Switzerland she worked for several international organizations. Paul and Helen retired to Ontario, where she pursued part-time journalism. She was an accomplished writer of light verse and prose essays - theatrical and musical criticism, memoirs and humorous pieces. Her love of writing and music inspired others. With the arrival of the Internet, her audience expanded. Helen was born to blog and only ill health could stop her. A memorial service will take place at a future date. | ALLEN, Helen Coleman (I49993)

| 2385 | "In 1845 a dreadful catastrophe occurred on Lough Erne, within a couple of miles of Pettigo, on the night of 19th of March of this year, by which six men lost their lives. On that night a party of seven men embarked on a small boat from the south side of the Boa Island to go to a small island in the Main Lough, with the intention of spending the night there with a party of distillers who were making poteen. The night was dark and cold; their boat ran on a rock, knocking a hole in the bottom and causing it to sink in a few minutes; the only one who escaped was a man called Robert Burnside, and, strange to say, was the only man in the boat who could not swim. He, when he found himself in the water, clutched an oar, and clung to it until he reached the shore. It was thought that the others perished more from cold and exposure, as the night was rather severe, and only for that would have made their escape, as they were good swimmers, and the distance from where the boat was wrecked was not far to the land." | 2394 | - Grandfather of N Haill Re his middle name - N Haill says that he did not have a middle name. But when he went to dentistry school he needed a middle name and he chose 'Hildane' at random. Alexander did not drink - confirmation and the reason for this is explained in the following excerpt from GL Allen Memoirs (Alex's brother): ... He [Alex] had another close call when he was around five. It was harvest time and he and I took the men out a lunch to the field. It was customary to have a bottle of whiskey on the field for an afternoon stimulant so when we were starting home they gave us a bottle that still had some in it to take home. I thought it would be good fun to make Alex drink so I induced him to take two or three drinks. He got so drunk he could not walk so I had to carry him on my back. He was so sick he nearly died and I am quite sure he has never tasted liquor since as he is an extreme prohibitionist. | ALLEN, Alexander Hildane (I4970)
