ARCHEY, Ann (I6202)

5164 Rachael came to Canada in 1851 with children Robert, Richard and Mary Ann. It is unclear if son John came with his mother or before her. Parents Richard & Rachel, with John, Robert, Richard and Mary Ann were counted in the 1851 Census, which was actually conducted in January 1852. REID, Rachel (I490)

5165 Rachel was a milliner (hat maker).

ALLEN, Rachel Williams (I3125)

5166 Rachel's husband, Thomas, was a Barnardo Boy who was sent from England to Canada in 1890 to his first placement with Robert W Morrison, a wagon builder at Farewell. But Mr. Morrison told Barnardo's that Thomas was too small to do the work for which he would be training him and offered to find him another place in the area. He eventually ended up in the home of William and Margory (McIntosh) Allen. He was treated as a son and he and Rachel grew up together.

5167 Rathwell/Rothwell - Mary says that the family spelled the name with an 'a' in southern Ontario but changed it to an 'o' in northern Ontario.
-------------------------------------------
The exact date is unknown, but Rebecca apparently followed William later to Algoma. One daughter died in April 1880 (Sophia), so I am guessing that she arrived after the birth of another daughter, born in April 1881. She must have had quite a trip with her children, including a young baby and all of their belongings. They travelled to Blind River by boat from Owen Sound and were greeted by Ed Warnock and some Indian helpers who had been sent by William to bring Rebecca, the children and all their belongings to their home in Gladstone Township.

RATHWELL, Rebecca Jane /ROTHWELL (I2519)

5168 Ray Elliott, the stepson of Hattie’s older sister Mary, was 19 years younger than Hattie but he loved her to pieces. According to family lore he pursued Hattie until she finally relented and agreed to marry him. Hattie was very concerned about their age difference and ‘what would people think’, bur her brother Bill would have none of it and said it was no one’s business. They were married in the Sault on August 26, 1933. ‘Hat & Ray’ was always one word; they were always a team, always together, for the next 32 years. MCCREA, Hattie Catherine (I203)

5169 Ray’s occupation, as listed on his wedding license, was engineer. He owned Snow White Laundry in the Sault not far from their home. He also partnered with Gordon Gavin to build a popular hamburger and ice cream snack bar called The Barbary Coast just west of Thessalon.  MCCREA, Hattie Catherine (I203)

5172 Re Birth Date: The Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Register a birth date of 12 Apr 1868, however other records (eg Birth Register, Death Statement and Obituary) have a birth date of either the 11th or 12th of Sep 1871. (Birth Record says 11th, but Death Stmt and Obit say the 12th) ALLEN, Samuel Henry (I453)

5173 Re Birth Year: Official biographies list Norman's year of birth as 1885, but his actual birth record clearly says 1884. LAMBERT, Senator Norman Platt (I5203)

5174 Re Birth Year: On 1901 Census Wm lists his birth year as 1872, but his sister Lizzie was born in 1872 (Birth Record on file). Census lists her as 5 years younger, so adjusted birth year to 1867. MYLES, William Thomas (I26922)

5175 Re Death Date: From The Advertiser, Owen Sound Newspaper Thurs 15 Sep 1881 (p. 3, col. 1) - Died: Mr. B. Allen received a cablegram Monday last that his father died on Friday of last week near the city of Sligo, Ireland, at the age of 90 years. Mrs. Allen still survives him, but after a union of 65 years here below, the reunion is not likely to be far in the distance. ALLEN, William (I6798)

5195 Relations - Excerpt from memoir of George Littleton Allen, son of Alexander (Sandy) Allen, written in 1945: "... There were the Sterrit's and the Farmer John Allen, a cousin of my father's, his brother Robert and Peel Willie. The latter two moved moved north before their families were grown up, but Farmer John, so called to distinguish him from another John, had 7 sons; 1 died young but the other 6 grew to manhood on the farm and have all passed away but one, Robert, who lives in the west.
His [John F's] son Robert, had a blacksmith shop. Mr Allen gave his son William a strip of land on the south side of the farm along the sideroad, where he had a planing mill. Some land was sold to Mr. Norris for a stable. A building was constructed along the sideroad to house a weigh scales for weighing loads of hay, straw, cattle, etc. All these small lots were eventually bought back. The first livestock on the farm was one ox, which was used with a neighbour's ox to benefit both." [NOTE: 'Peel Willie' mentioned above, is my great grandfather. He and his brother Robert moved to Iron Bridge, Algoma District, Ontario]

ALLEN, John Forbes (I487)

5196 Relations: There is strong evidence to support that Ellen was related to her husband, John F. Her uncle, Hugh, was Margery (Morrison) Allen's brother making her father, Richard Morrison, the nephew of Margery. MORRISON, Eleanor (Ellen) (I488)

5197 Relations: There is strong evidence to support that John's wife, Ellen was related to her husband. Ellen's father, Richard Morrison, was the nephew of John F's mother, Margery (Morrison) Allen. ALLEN, John Forbes (I487)

5198 RELATIONSHIP TO ME: In GL Allen's written memories of his childhood, he describes his father, Alexander Allen, as a "cousin" of my own great grandfather, William Allen (1838-1911 - son of William & Margery). It is unclear if he meant 1st cousin - which would mean that George, the father of John B, Alexander and George of Rothsay, and the father of my great grandfather, William, would have been brothers - or another 'degree' of cousin. I have assumed a 1st cousin relationship and based the tree accordingly. ALLEN, George (I4055)
