5251 Sarah's grandson remembers her as a "tough old lady". She admitted herself into a senior's home in her 90's - no one else was going to put her into one (tell her what to do). Her parents died when she was young and she went to live with the John F Allen family. Her grandson says with a smile "she looked the Allen's over and married the best one".

MARKLE, Sarah Isabelle (I3141)

5252 Sarah's mother, Sarah Jane (Morrison) Morrison died in 1869, one day after delivering Sarah. She was raised for a time by her Aunt Jane and her husband, Thomas Rooney. This is according to a family history written by Glenn Morrison called 'The Morrisons of Farewell'. The 1871 Census shows Hughie newly married to Ellen (married 1870) and Sarah is not with them. But by the 1881 Census she is back in this household. MORRISON, Sarah (I2572)

"While I'm not entirely sure what a "civil engineer of the old school" is, I am intrigued by the family legend that says three brothers who were land surveyors emigrated to Canada and settled in Mono Township. The three brothers were: James Brett of Mono, whose full given name may have been Richard James or Robert James, abbreviated as RJ in some correspondence; Henry Brett of Rosemont (1792-1877) who married Catherine Cuffe; and George Brett of Mono (1785- ) who married Jane Jackson."
Ada Brett, wife of Brenton Kerr, was 2xgreat granddaughter of Henry Brett and Catherine Cuffe of Rosemont, Ontario.

5264 Shelburne Free Press & Economist, Thursday, January 12, 1933 - Page 8 - MRS. THOS. BROUGHTON: Friends here learned with deep regret on Sunday of the sudden passing of Mrs. Thomas Broughton that morning at Port Elgin from heart disease, after an illness of nine days. The deceased, whose maiden name was Margaret Jane Shannon, was 69 years old, was born at Vandeleur, Ont., and came to Melancthon township when the family moved to near Corbetton in 1877. She was married in February, 1899, to Thomas Broughton, who passed away nine years ago. Mrs. Broughton had resided in the district about 45 years and her kindly life and Christian character will be long remembered by her friends and neighbors. She was a member of the United Church at Corbetton. The surviving family are two sons and one daughter, namely: T. R. S. Broughton on the teaching staff of Bryn Mawr College, Philadelphia, Pa.; Arthur, on the homestead, Melancthon township; and Miss Lillian, on the teaching staff of Port Elgin High School. Mrs. Broughton for the past two years has resided at Port Elgin with her daughter.
There are also three brothers: Thos. Shannon, Vandeleur; George, in Markdale, and John, in Vancouver, B.C. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the old home on Highway No. 10 to Dundalk Cemetery. Rev. J. A. H. Hodgson, of Corbetton, was the officiating minister. The pallbearers were: R. Watson, B. Henderson, T. Woods, H. Oldfield, C. Lonsway and J. M. Oldfield. Floral tributes covering the casket were from Port Elgin High School staff; Mrs. R. George and Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Neff, Miss O. Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Shannon, Geo. Shannon. Among the friends present from a distance were: son Robert from Philadelphia and daughter Lillian, from Port Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. George E. Pallister and daughter and Mr. George Broughton, Mono Road; Mr. and Mrs. T. Shannon, Markdale. -Dundalk Herald.
