Death of Henry Lee
One of the best known and most highly respected residents of the United Counties, in the person of Henry Lee, of Lyn, died on July 27, 1892, aged 65 years.
One of a large family of 13 sons and one daughter of Gordon Lee (Gardner Lee), of Lyn, he started out at the death of his father in 1845, with nothing but good health, lots of energy, and perfect integrity, to battle life, at the age of 18 years. Gradually he bought piece by piece of the homestead from the other heirs until he was full owner of the homestead upon which he was born. He farmed, and also bought horses and other livestock for the American market. He was often heard to remark that he had visited every farmer house in the county.
From the first he was a great believer in the county fairs, and was a member of the board of directors of Unionville Fair, and also an active member of the Agricultural Society, and as an exhibitor took many prizes.
As he possessed a genial, social disposition, his companionship was highly prized, and on hunting or fishing excursions he was always the most valued member of the party.
He had been in perfect health all his life until suddenly stricken with fever, and it became known that he was dangerously ill only three days before he died. His death casts a gloom over the village of Lyn and the entire county. Many of his friends were not able to attend the funeral as they could not be notified in time, as owing to the nature of his illness, the funeral had to be held shortly after his death. He leaves three sons, three daughters, and three orphan grandchildren.
In his will he left to: William Henry (1st son) - Lots 32 & 33 -5th conc. $150, $100 & $50 in part of an annuity; James Albert (2nd son) - a farm in the 5th concession. James died of burns trying to save his children when the house caught on fire; John Morden (3rd son) - $600 - when he became of age; Phoeby Ann Henderson - $500; Dora - $500; Bertha $500.
