  Rachel was a milliner (hat maker). Rachel's husband, Thomas, was a Barnardo Boy who was sent from England to Canada in 1890 to his first placement with Robert W Morrison, a wagon builder at Farewell. But Mr. Morrison told Barnardo's that Thomas was too small to do the work for which he would be training him and offered to find him another place in the area. He eventually ended up in the home of William and Margory (McIntosh) Allen. He was treated as a son and he and Rachel grew up together.
