"One of the chief hazards facing settlers during the early years of settlement was the lack of medical aid. For several years the closest doctor to Kirkwood was located at Bruces Mines, a long distance by horse and buggy at the best of times. ... One of the most tragic examples of the settlers' plight when serious illnes struck, befell the Johns family. Within the space of a week, a son, a mother and a daughter were snatched away by pneumonia and "complications". The later may have been diptheria. Following is an excerpt from an obituary in the Algoma Advocate:
"It is seldom that we are called upon to chronicle three deaths in a family in one issue, but nevertheless such is the case this week. Within five days, Mr Fred Johns of Thessalon Tp. has been bereaved of a loving wife, a daughter and a son. In another column we recorded the death of Isaac Johns, which sad event took place on Friday morning of last week. On Tuesday, Elizabeth, beloved wife of Fred Johns, in the 69th year of her age passed over to the great majority and on the following morning (Wednesday) Winnifred, aged 25 years and six months, youngest daughter of the aforesaid, departed this life. Deceased were highly esteemed in the community in which they lived and their many friends and acquaintances are almost heart stricken at the sad calamity which has befallen the home of their friend and neighbour."
Fred Johns had come to Kirkwood in the early 'eighties', purchasing the homestead that has since been associated with the family name, from Sam Brethour. Mr Johns was a devout, hard-working citizen. By industrousness and perserverance he cleared a large section of his property for cultivation, even to the point of removing the stubborn stumps. The old gentlerman left the homestead after the tragedy which robbed him of his wife, and two of his children."
