Notes - Received his academic education at Grand River Institute, located at Austeinburgh, Ohio, where he graduated in 1877 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. After graduation he taught school in Aurora, Ohio and in 1879 and 1880 attended the law school at Ann Arbour, Michigan and was admitted to the practice of Law in 1880. He began the practice of his profession at Canton, Ohio, where he remained until 1887, when he moved to Duluth Minnesota where he continued to practice his profession.
- Author of a well-known law treatise, "Spencer on Marine Collisions."
- Aside from his legal activities he was connected with several iron mining companies and was secretary and treasurer of the Duluth & Oklahoma Oil Co. He served as state senator from his district during 1895-97. He was a member of the Duluth Boat and Duluth Commercial clubs, and of Duluth Commandery, Knights Templar. He was married, Sept. 30, 1886, to his first wife, Jessie Lee, daughter of Dr. Eben Bradford Lee and Helen Miller of Garretsville, Ohio. They had four children; Herbert Lee, mining engineer, Roger W., lawyer, Eben and Gerard Spencer.
